KATHMANDU: Attorney General Dr. Dinmani Pokharel has replied that the decision not to pursue a case against Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane in passport misuse allegation was made according to the legal procedure.
Although Lamichhane himself admitted to the court that he had obtained a Nepali passport while having American citizenship and a passport, the Attorney General’s Office decided not to pursue a case against him on March 20.
Defending the publicly criticized decision, Attorney General Pokharel on Friday claimed that there was no political bargaining when that decision was made.
“The decision not to file a case against Rabi Lamichhane has been finalized by consensus,” the Attorney General said in a program held on the occasion of his 100th day in office, adding, “It is not over with political bargaining and pressure.”
Since the Attorney General is appointed politically, it seems that it has ended politically. But we have decided not to proceed with the case according to the law and procedure.
Hearing the writ filed by Yuvraj Paudel ‘Safal’ against the decision of the Attorney General, the Supreme Court refused to grant an interim order.
On Wednesday, a single bench of Justice Hari Phuyal issued only a show cause order to uphold the decision of the Attorney General’s office.
