NTA implementing MDMS from today

Unregistered phones to face disconnection

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has announced the launch of the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) starting from today.

Purushottam Khanal, Chairman of the Authority, said that any phones not registered within the system will be subject to immediate disconnection.

In line with this implementation, the Authority has issued a notice on October 21, granting users a 15-day window to register mobile handsets that have not yet been enrolled in the MDMS.

Failure to comply with this directive will result in the suspension of mobile telecommunication services, as per the outlined rules.

The initial application of the MDMS will focus on the regulation of ‘high range’ mobile handsets, encompassing over a hundred thousand high-value devices.

Khanal stated, “Approximately 800 to 1000 handsets, notably premium models like iPhone, OnePlus, and Samsung, are poised for disconnection tomorrow. We plan to gradually block unregistered handsets on a daily basis.”

The mandatory registration of the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number for all imported mobile phones entering Nepal is a key aspect of the MDMS.

Legally imported devices, which have undergone proper customs clearance, automatically feature registered IMEI numbers in the MDMS system.

To verify whether a phone is registered with MDMS, individuals can visit the official portal at https://mdms.nta.gov.np/ and enter the IMEI number, which can be obtained by dialing *#06# on the phone’s keypad.

Alternatively, for the registration of new handsets, users can access the Authority’s website at https://eir.nta.gov.np.
