Police take to five rounds of aerial fire amidst violent clash in Kalyanpur, Siraha

SIRAHA: A confrontation between a faction of ward chairpersons supported by the mayor and dissatisfied counterparts in Kalyanpur municipality, Siraha, escalated into a violent clash. The dispute revolved around issues related to the municipal assembly.

This simmering feud between the two factions had persisted for several days. Tensions escalated when supporters of Mayor Rampukar Sah joined a protest organized by the dissatisfied group.

The situation took a volatile turn as the municipal office’s windows were shattered by stones hurled by the disgruntled faction. In response, law enforcement officers resorted to the use of force to regain control.

According to the Siraha police, they fired 21 rounds of tear gas to quell the unrest, with an additional five rounds discharged into the air. The armed police also deployed 15 rounds of tear gas. The confrontation resulted in numerous injuries, including six security personnel.

Locals reported that both sides, comprising the mayor and ward presidents, sustained dozens of casualties. In an effort to restore order, a significant contingent of security personnel was deployed in the area. A total of 22 people, including 16 protestors, four Nepal Police officers, and two Armed Police personnel, were injured during the confrontation.
