TikTok initiates registration process in Nepal

KATHMANDU: TikTok has taken steps to register as a social network in Nepal, having sent an email to the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology for registration purposes.

Netra Prasad Subedi, joint secretary at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, confirmed TikTok’s initiative, mentioning that the platform expressed its intent to register in Nepal.

“Despite the previous ban imposed by the Nepal government, TikTok has sent an email regarding registration. However, immediate action won’t be taken due to the existing ban,” stated Subedi. “We are currently drafting a law to regulate social media, and the registration process can commence once the law is enacted.”

Addressing the issue on Monday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ suggested the possibility of regulating and reopening TikTok. The social media guidelines of Nepal mandate registration within three months of operating in Nepal.
