Govt moves SC challenging release of cricketer Lamichhane on bail



KATHMANDU: A petition has been registered at the Supreme Court (SC) today, challenging the decision of High Court Patan to release rape accused Sandeep Lamichhane on bail.

The government moved the apex court seeking to repeal the decision to release Lamichhane and to undertake further investigation by keeping him in custody.

The writ filed by the Deputy Attorney, Office of the Attorney General expresses the possibility of evidence being destroyed by the accused when out of custody.

The High Court on January 12 decided to release Lamichhane, the former captain of the national men’s cricket team, on bail of Rs two million.

The court had set some conditions for the release.

The 22-year-old Lamichhane was arrested on October 6 after a 17-year-old minor filed a case alleging him of raping her on August 21.
