Council for Standards endorses 15 certification marks in a year

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Council for Standards endorsed 15 Nepal Standards and Certification Marks in the fiscal year 2078-79 BS (2021-22).

The technical team of the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology (NBSM) first conducted a technical study on the applications seeking the Standards, decided whether the application meets the criteria for the same, granted NS Standards to those goods and products meeting the standards and sent them to the Bureau for an approval. The procedures take place in accordance with Nepal Standards (Certification Mark) Act, 2037 (1980).

Bureau’s director general is the member-secretary in the Council.

As said by Bureau director general Dinanath Mishra, they first decided whether to grant the national standards to proposed goods and services after going through a study and then send the decision to the Council for the endorsement.

In the fiscal year 2077-78 BS (2020-21), the Council had recognized 31 standards and the number went down last year due to a delay in the appointment of the line minister (Minister for industry, commerce and supplies).

The Bureau last year provided Nepal Standards (certification mark) to 49 industries. In the period, it conducted monitoring of industries 123 times and collected samples of 756 goods. It conducted the lab tests of 3,214 goods and provided calibration service to 1,859 goods.

The revenue collection of the Bureau last fiscal was Rs 49.2 million.
