KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has demanded the resignation of Lumbini Chief Minister Kul Prasad KC.

The Lumbini UML parliamentary party has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister KC stating that the CM was involved in irregularities in the contract awarded for the Lumbini Provincial Hospital building.

The contract for a 10-storey hospital building with 1,200 beds was awarded by drafting a specification with the intent of embezzling Rs 1.5 billion.

The contract was canceled on March 28 after the Public Procurement Monitoring Office found faults in the contract process.

Chief Executive Officer of Lumbini Provincial Infrastructure Development Authority Ananta Raj Ghimire has resigned following the identification of fraud. However, the UML viewed that the cancellation of the contract process and the resignation of the CEO does not rid the government of its ill intent.

UML Deputy parliamentary party leader Baijnath Chaudhary on Wednesday said CM KC should resign as he is the chairperson of the provincial infrastructure development committee and hence is responsible for the misappropriation. CEO Ghimire was the member-secretary of the committee.

The UML sought CM KC’s resignation on moral grounds. “It has become clear that there was nexus between the provincial government and the contractor from drafting the contract specification for the construction of the hospital building to awarding the contract. Therefore, it is unethical for the chief minister to remain in office; he should resign immediately,” the UML said.
