Lawmakers call for management of solid waste in valley



KATHMANDU: Lawmakers have drawn the attention of the authorities concerned demanding sustainable solution to unmanaged solid waste and unmanaged urbanization in the Kathmandu Valley.

Taking part in a discussion on plans, programs and achievements of the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority in the meeting of the Sustainable Development and Good Governance Committee under the National Assembly on Thursday, they sought alternatives to the landfill site, Bancharedanda, to dump the valley waste. Secretary at the Ministry of Urban Development, Dr Ramesh Prasad Singh, said the ministry was coordinating for the management of garbage of the valley.

On the matter, a draft of the related bill has been sent to the Ministry of Law, he said while stating that Bagmati, Rudramati and Bishnumati rivers corridors have helped manage traffic jams in the valley to some extent.

Similarly, of the total 72 kilometers outer ring road proposed in the valley through budget for the fiscal year, 2061/62 BS, the detailed project proposal to construct 54.48 kilometers was prepared, said deputy development commissioner Nabaraj Pyakurel.

The government has been written to acquire lands to construct 6.6 kilometers road under Satungal road section, he added.

The meeting was attended by lawmakers Kamala Panta, Jag Prasad Sharma, Nanda Chapain and Krishna Prasad Paudel among others.
