Zelenskyy visit US today: Reports

KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to visit the White House and U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, several media outlets are reporting, though those plans could be called off at any time for security reasons.

Punchbowl News was the first to report the first known visit by Zelenskyy since Russian forces invaded Ukraine, on February 24. All of the media outlets cited anonymous sources.

The Ukrainian president is expected to meet with President Joe Biden and address a joint session of Congress. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi informed members that there would be a Wednesday night session of Congress.

“We are ending a very special session of the 117th Congress with legislation that makes progress for the American people as well as support for our Democracy,” Pelosi wrote Tuesday in a letter to colleagues. “Please be present for a very special focus on Democracy Wednesday night.”

U.S. lawmakers are to vote on a budget this week that includes $45 billion in emergency funding for Ukraine.

Earlier Tuesday, Zelenskyy visited the eastern city of Bakhmut, where the two countries’ forces have engaged in some of the most intense fighting.
