Police raid Sunakothi-based Sparsh Foods; company found using highly unethical standard for making bakery items

KATHMANDU: The Metropolitan Crime Division has raided bread and cookies manufacturer Sparsh Food Products and Packaging Company located at Sunakothi in Lalitpur Monday.

Police conducted the raid after getting information that the company was making cookies out of expired bakery products and selling them as fresh food, resorting to socially unethical business practice that is harmful to consumers.

The company collected expired bakery products from the market, crushed them and re-made cookies, toasts and biscuits using the stale powder base.

During the police raid, the company was preparing to bake fresh cookies out of items that had expired in 2019.

Crime Division’s DSP Krishna Kumar Chand informed that bakery items were made being made by using rotten and date-expired bread items.

Police destroyed the stale bread items found at the company’s factory. There were 120 bags of date-expired bread and cookies found at the site.

It has become known that Nar Bahadur Shrestha, who was arrested last month in connection to defrauding people by selling fake honey, is the prioprieter of Sparsh Food Products and Packaging.

Police said Shrestha also ran Shritara Foods and Packaging Limited and both of his companies had not obtained permission from the Department of Food Technology And Quality Control. The department has sealed both the companies.
