NHRC draws government’s attention to transitional justice

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded with the government to consider amendment in the Act related to transitional justice in line with international principles related to the same issue.

Issuing a press statement here today, the human rights watchdog agency in the country also demanded that the amendment in the Act should not contradict with the verdicts issued by the Supreme Court on the same issue.

In the statement, Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel urged the government to ensure justice to conflict-victims after adequately consulting with the victims and stakeholders as well as heeding the recommendations of the Commission.

The NHRC also called attention of the government towards the bill presented by the government to amend the Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappeared Persons and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act-2071 BS and appealed with the government to revise the Act in such a way that it would be acceptable to all.

“The Commission reminds the government that ensuring justice to the conflict victims is the main subject of the transitional justice,” it said.

The statement further said, “There is a tradition of consulting with the National Human Rights Commission while considering amendment in the laws. We would like to remind the government that the Commission has the constitutional authority to deal with the matters related to the human rights.”

The Commission has expressed concern over the lack of discussions and consultations held by the government on the above-mentioned matter.
