China eyeing Nepali media spectrum through illegal investment, local media reports

KATHMANDU: In a bid to be a dominant power in Nepal, China, which has been increasing its interest and interference in Nepal’s politics, is eyeing Nepal’s media, a local media report has said.

This was revealed by the ‘National Unity Campaign’, a campaign for a federal Hindu republic, according to mysanchar.com.

China Audio Media Group has invested Rs 31 million 7 thousand 642 on Malikarjun FM in Kathmandu, the local media quoted the Campaign.

Malikarjun FM and Capital FM are joint ventures. According to the Chairman of the Campaign, Binay Yadav, the owner of the two companies is Prakash Babu Poudel.

The money received from China is found to have been spent on the establishment of Raj Media Group Pvt. According to Yadav, this issue has also been mentioned in the audit report of Malikarjun FM, mysanchar.com said.

It should be noted that Nepal’s law prohibits foreign investment in the media sector.

Sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Foreign Investment and Technology Transfer Act, 2075 provides that foreign investors can invest in any industry and benefit from such investment.
