MCC and coalition two different issues: Spokesperson Mahat

CHITWAN: Nepali Congress (NC) Spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat said that the US-aid proposal from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and ruling coalition are two different issues.

Speaking at a programme organized by the Nepal Press Union, Chitwan chapter on Friday, Spokesperson Mahat asserted, “Nepali Congress proposed to table the MCC compact in the parliament for deliberation. It does not mean that the current ruling-alliance should break down.”

He said that the NC was confident that there would not be any problem in the incumbent coalition due to the MCC. He assured that MCC was not anti-national, saying it was in the interest of the country.

“If Nepal gets roads built, transmission lines installed, can we call it treacherous against the country? Let’s table it in parliament and discuss if there are weaknesses. Why are we hesitating to table it?”

Stating that the Speaker of the House of Representatives has no rights to hold any agenda in the parliament, Mahat said that the political parties should come up with a clear concept on the MCC Compact.

“The political parties should be decisive whether they are for or against the MCC.”

Spokesperson Mahat recalled that letter sent by CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ pledging to pass the MCC, he questioned,”

Hasn’t Prachanda signed the letter assuring of endorsement of the MCC?”

He also reminded that efforts were made to move the document to parliamentary proceedings during the erstwhile government led by KP Oli and urged the current major opposition party not to change their mind once it is out of the government.
