KATHMANDU: Janata Pragatisheel Party Chairman Hridayesh Tripathi has held talks with CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli at the latter’s residence in Balkot, Bhaktapur, on Monday.
The two leaders discussed the Citizenship Bill and the possible electoral coordination between the two parties during the meeting.
Tripathi said he discussed possibility of forming electoral coordination with the UML chair. He viewed that the coalition as mandatory given that no party is likely to secure a clear majority under the current electoral system of proportional representation and first-past-the-post.
He apprised that he also discussed the Citizenship Bill with Oli.
Oli told Tripathi that he had not yet seen the message sent by the President to the Parliament while returning the bill.
After quitting Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN), Tripathi and Brijesh Kumar Gupta formed an independent political group. Contesting the the 2017 House of Representatives elections under the UML’s Sun symbol, they had won parliamentary seats then.
During Oli’s tenure as Prime Minister, Tripathi also briefly became the Minister of Health and Population.
Though Gupta has joined UML, Tripathi is leading the self-formed Janata Pragatisheel Party.
