There will be no agreement without national consensus: PM Deuba
Prime Minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has assured that there would be no agreement without forging a national consensus.
In a meeting held among the top leaders of the ruling coalition at Prime Minister’s official residence at Baluwatar Wednesday, Prime Minister Deuba clarified that he could not agree to ink any agreement that would hurt the country despite the interest or pressure from any other country.
He reaffirmed his commitment at the time when the proposed State Partnership Program (SPP) agreement with the USA-related issue was spurring public discourse and courting controversies.
Signing SPP would spur geopolitical conflict: UML
The main opposition party CPN-UML has drawn serious attention of the government towards draft of the USA’s State Partnership Program (SPP) that Nepal is supposed to sign.
UML’s parliamentarian Pradeep Kumar Gyawali blamed that Nepal government considering signing the SPP would spur geopolitical conflict in the country.
Seeking special time in today’s meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR), Gyawali, also former Minister for Foreign Affairs, demanded with the government to clarify on the draft of the SPP made public.
PM Deuba should clarify about SPP in Parliament: NC lawmaker Gagan Thapa
Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary and lawmaker Gagan Thapa has said that Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba should clarify the government’s position on the State Partnership Program (SPP) with the United States in the Parliament.
Thapa said that Nepal should not participate in any program linked to the strategic interests of any power.
Speaking in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Thapa said that Nepal should not in any way sign the SPP.
He added that the Constitution of Nepal would not allow such an agreement.
Nine communist parties demand cancellation of PM Deuba’s US visit
Nine communist parties have demanded the cancellation of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba’s visit to the United States.
Issuing a joint statement on Wednesday, CPN-Revolutionary Maoist General Secretary Mohan Baidya “Kiran”, CPN-Maoist General Secretary Netra Bikram Chand “Biplav”, among others have demanded that Prime Minister Deuba’s visit to the United States be canceled.
It has also asked the government to not sign any agreement that is detrimental to the nation.
Budgets of provinces announced
Provincial governments presented the provincial budgets before their respective assemblies on Wednesday.
Province 1 government presented budget of Rs 39.73 billion, Madhes Province of 46.88 billion and Bagmati Province government of 70.93 billion.
Likewise, Gandaki Province government presented annual budget of Rs 35.90 billion, Lumbini government of Rs 42.63 billion, Karnali Province government of Rs 32.61 billion, and Sudurpaschim government of 36.74 billion.
NEPSE index drops by 29.89 points Wednesday
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) has declined by 29.89 points Wednesday.
A total of 41,82,369 shares of 229 companies were bought and sold 30,602 times in the secondary market, bringing the total turnover of the day to Rs 1.49 billion.
