KATHMANDU: The Cyber Bureau of the Police Headquarters has warned the public saying that the incidents of fraud through electronic media have increased recently.

Issuing a notice on Tuesday, the bureau urged people to be cautious as conducting financial transactions through electronic means can be risky.

“Lately, we have noticed that various social networking sites like WhatsApp, Viber, Imo, video, audio and text messaging have been used to ask for mobile banking usernames and passwords,” the Bureau said, “Fake websites are likely to get customer confidential information with tempting messages saying ‘You have won the lottery’ and urging them to deposit some money in the name of tax clearance.”

The Bureau urged the public not to believe such misleading information and to be vigilant against misuse of technology and fraud.

The Bureau requested not to disclose one’s confidential passwords and OTP or other sensitive information to anyone through any medium.

The Bureau requested to get further information from the Department of Payment Systems and the Department of Foreign Exchange Management of Nepal Rastra Bank regarding the risks that may occur while conducting financial transactions through electronic medium.
