Govt decides to send formal invitation to Indian Army CoAS to visit Nepal

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to send a formal invitation to Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) of the Indian Army General Manoj Pandey to visit Nepal.

Government Spokesperson and Minister of Communication and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki informed in this regard on Sunday while announcing the decision of the Council of Ministers meeting held last Thursday.

Nepali Army Chief of Army Staff General Prabhuram Sharma, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had already offered Indian Army CoAS Pandey to visit Nepal from September 5 to 8. However, the date of the Indian CoAS visit is yet to be approved.

The Indian Army chief will be awarded the honorary title of General of the Nepali Army during his visit and the two Armies would discuss matters related to bilateral military interest, among others.

Nepali and Indian armies share a tradition of conferring the honorary title of General to each others’ CoAS since 1950. Accordingly, incumbent Nepali Army CoAS Prabhuram Sharma received the honorary title of General of the Indian Army from the Indian President Ram Nath Kovind on November 10 last year.

However, when CoAS General Sharma was conferred the title, General Manoj Mukund Naravane was the Indian Army CoAS.

The current Indian Army CoAS General Manoj Pande assumed office on April 30, 2022, and he has yet to be conferred the title in Nepal.
