Govt tables Bill to Amend Citizenship Act in HoR

KATHMANDU: The government tabled a bill to amend the Citizenship Act in the House of Representatives (HoR) on Wednesday.

Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand tabled a bill to amend the Citizenship Act.

The amendment bill was tabled as the Constitution does not allow any citizen to be deprived of citizenship, Home Minister Khand said while tabling the bill.

Earlier, Prem Suwal of Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party, Sher Bahadur Tamang and Bhim Rawal of CPN-UML had presented their ‘notices’ against the bill.

UML has been objecting to the withdrawal of the report submitted by the State Management Committee on the Citizenship Bill.

In the House of Representatives, the State Management Committee had made it mandatory for an individual to have resided in Nepal for seven consecutive years in order to obtain naturalized citizenship.
