I backed Deuba as per voters’ mandate in general convention: Leader Singh

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Prakash Man Singh has said he supported Prime Minister and party President Sher Bahadur Deuba as per the mandate received from the first phase of election during the 14th General Convention.

Addressing a flag hoisting program organized by the NC Regional Working Committee Constituency-2 Bhaktapur on Thursday, he said that he had supported PM Deuba respecting the wishes of voters after the first phase of election for NC presidency.

Leader Singh had contested the election for party president against PM Deuba and three other candidates. PM Deuba and Dr. Shekhar Koirala had secured highest number of votes in the first phase of election for NC president in the general convention after which all other candidates had dropped out of the polls and extended support to Deuba.

Recalling he sought votes for changing the central leadership and institutionalizing NC as statute abiding organization, he said after voters cast ballots to retain erstwhile leadership — exact opposite of his agenda — he supported PM Deuba. “I had to obey the mandate after participating in a democratic exercise of a democratic party,” he said.

He also rued that his decision to support Deuba then, had draw flak from various corners, and he had to face undue criticism on social media and elsewhere.

Stating that he did not become a leader by associating himself to his father NC’s veteran leader Ganesh Man Singh, he said he rose to this level through hard work and struggled from the grassroot.
