South Korean climber Hong to attempt Lhotse South Face for seventh time

KATHMANDU: South Korean climber Sung-Taek Hong is set to attempt Lhotse South Face for the seventh time this spring.

“I am making my seventh attempt on the Lhotse South Face,” Hong, 55, told a press conference in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

Lhotse South Face is one of the toughest climbs, and Hong has attempted it six times.

Managed by Seven Summit Treks, Hong’s team will climb the world’s 4th highest peak and the “most difficult verticle walls” as part of the Lhotse South Face Expedition 2022.

Hong has already reached all three Poles and crossed the Bering Strait and Greenland.

Others in the Expedition are Jupil Park, Byoung Tae, Myung Suk Koh, Nakjong Seong, Jorge Egoxheraga Rodriguez, Jae Chul Kim, and Vadim Pirmin Druelle.

Hong, who is leading an eight-member international expedition team along with 14 Sherpa guides, said he would attempt to make it happen this time.

It should be noted that two Russian climbers — Serguey Bershov and Vladimir Karataev — first climbed the mountain from the south face wall in 1990.

No other expedition teams have made it to the top so far.

A mountaineer, explorer, adventurer, and author, Hong and his team will fly to Lukla on Wednesday.
