Government allows import of betel nuts, black pepper and peas

KATHMANDU: The government has given permission to import betel nut, black pepper and peas meant for commercial purposes.

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies issued a notification in the Nepal Gazette stating that the import of these items, which used to be smuggled, has been allowed for traders.

Now, the Department of Commerce, Supplies and Consumer Protection will approve the import of these items for the current fiscal year.

At a time when the country’s foreign exchange reserves are declining and the government is tightening the import of more than 1,500 items, the government has opened the import of these items for industrial purposes.

Recently, the Nepal Rastra Bank has reduced the daily import quota of gold from 20 kg to 10 kg.

Provision has been made to keep a certain margin amount while opening LC for import of some other items.
