Limited number of women candidacies recorded under FPTP

KATHMANDU: Though the candidacy nomination registration for the November 20 election to the Federal and Provincial Assemblies was completed on Sunday, the number of women candidates for the first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system is not as expected.

Final details have not been received to the Election Commission (EC) as communication is not established in some districts and Offices of the Returning Officers but the number of women’s candidacy is limited compared to the men’s candidacy.

As recorded in the EC’s information system till last evening, 191 women’s candidacy was recorded while the number of men candidate is 1,937 for the 165 seats in the election to the House of Representatives (HoR).

In Provincial Assemblies, altogether 244 women and one other filed their candidacy nomination papers while 2,600 men have registered their nomination, EC’s Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel said.

EC’s Spokesperson Sharma Poudel said that 49 women candidates are from Province No. 1, 55 are from Madhes Province, 74 from Bagmati Province, 29 from Gandaki Province, 23 from Lumbini Province, two from Karnali Province and 12 from Sudurpaschim Province.

The EC is scheduled to release the list of candidates today itself whose nomination papers were registered earlier today.
