Development sans public participation isn’t successful: Minister Bhusal

KATHMANDU: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Pampha Bhusal, has said that only development reflecting the public aspiration is sustainable and she is committed to it.

Inaugurating the 25th Annual General Meeting of the Lalitpur Metropolis-22, Maharjan Samaj, in Lalitpur today, she said, “The development without people’s participation is not successful; so, the development projects should be formulated only by taking the consent of the people.”

Minister Bhusal recalled that she has taken important initiatives for irrigating the farmers’ fields in Bungmati and revival of ‘rajkulo’ or ancient irrigation canals built by orders from the then kings, in Lalitpur, including the Bhorle canal.

Stating that the plan for developing the Nakhkhu corridor has been vigorously pursued, she committed to take initiatives to create a situation in which the locals would be able to live a quality life in future.

“It is my goal to develop Bungmati as a tourism destination by conserving the local art, craft and culture. A room in every house in Bungmati should be set aside for using it for home-stay tourism and the people should earn a living by selling locally-produced goods and crafts having unique art,” Minister Bhusal suggested.

She also stressed on the need of giving continuity to the indigenous art and culture by transferring it to the new generation, calling on the Maharjan Samaj to preserve and promote the community’s art and culture by bringing the youths together.

The Samaj office-bearers on the occasion urged the political parties and social leaders to extend cooperation in the development and transformation of the society.
