Ghimire, Poudel appointed ambassadors

President Bidya Devi Bhandari has appointed Harichandra Ghimire and Dilliraj Poudel as the Nepali ambassadors to Myanmar and Malaysia respectively.

They were appointed upon the recommendation of the government in accordance with Article 282 (1) of Constitution of Nepal, according to Spokesperson at President’s Office, Sagar Acharya.

Meanwhile, the Nepali ambassador to the UK, Gyan Chandra Acharya, has been appointed the non-resident ambassador to Malta and ambassador to the US, Prof Shreedhar Khatri, the non-resident ambassador to Costa Rica.

EC passes electoral calendar for November 20 polls

The Election Commission (EC) has approved the calendar of election activities under the first-past-the-post system of the November 20 federal and provincial poll.

As per the calendar, the candidacy nomination registration and the publication of the nomination list will take place on October 9 and the submission of the complaints against candidates on October 10.

Similarly, a decision over nomination letters and complaints will happen on October 10 and 11. The publication of the name-list of candidates will occur on October 11 and the candidacy withdrawal on October 12.

Publishing the final name-list of candidates and the award of election symbols to them will take place accordingly, said the EC’s Joint Spokesperson Surya Prasad Aryal in a statement on Thursday.

CAN suspends cricket team captain Lamichhane

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has suspended the national team captain Sandeep Lamichhane.

The move comes after the national team captain was accused of raping a minor and an arrest warrant being issued against him.

According to CAN Acting Secretary Prashant Vikram Malla, a meeting of CAN performance committee held on Thursday decided to suspend Lamichhane from the national team.

A 17-year-old girl had filed a complaint against Lamichhane at the Metropolitan Police Circle, Gaushala, on Tuesday.

Earlier, Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warrant against the cricketer.

Lamichhane is currently in West Indies playing the Caribbean League.

Indian Army Chief Pande returns home

The visiting Indian Army Chief Manoj Pande returned home on Thursday by concluding his five-day official visit to Nepal. He had come to Nepal at the invitation of Chief of Army Staff, Prabhuram Sharma.

Deputy Chief of Army Staff, Balkrishna Karki, saw off Pande at Tribhuvan International Airport.

During the visit, the Indian Army Chief Pande was conferred on the Hononary General of Nepali Army as part of the historical tradition existing between the armies of Nepal and India.

President Bidya Bhandari had conferred the title on him amidst a special ceremony organized at President’s Office, Shital Niwas.

Similarly, Pande paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, and held talks with his Nepali counterpart Sharma.

Economy cannot develop sans participation of private sector: Prachanda

CPN Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” has said that the national economy cannot be developed without the participation of the private sector.

Addressing the Nepal Infrastructure Summit 2022, Prachanda said that the way forward was embrace of public private partnership model for progress.

On the occasion, he said that it is necessary to change the general attitude towards the private sector.

“The attitude of the state towards the private sector and the private sector towards the state must change,” the Maoist chair said.

He opined that the state should be more responsible for bringing in foreign investment.

Nepal Railways conducts test run on Kurtha-Bijalpura section

Nepal Railways Company on Thursday conducted a test run on the Kurtha-Bijapulra section of the trans-border railway line.

According to the company, it conducted the test run after all physical works on the track were completed.

The first phase of the Nepal-India railway line, which links Jayanagar of India with Kurtha of Nepal, came into operation in March.

The 35-kilometer railway line was jointly flagged by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

“The trail ran at the speed of 100 km per hour on the new track,” said Rabindra Sah, an engineer of the Nepal Railways Company.

According to Sah, the Bijapurla-Bardibas section of the railway line will be ready for test run very soon.

Comedian Singh granted bail after contracting COVID-19

Comedian Apoorva Kshitij Singh, who was accused of hurting the sentiments of the Newar community, has contracted COVID-19 and has been granted bail.

Following the confirmation of him being infected, court released on bail for treatment.

According to Chief of Kathmandu District Government Attorney Office Ganga Paudel, Singh was released for treatment.

Police had admitted him to Bir Hospital for treatment last Tuesday after he fell ill in the custody of District Police Complex Teku, Kathmandu.

Kathmandu District Court had on Wednesday extended Singh’s remand for five more days.

Police had arrested him on August 28 and he was in custody since then.

NEPSE loses 2.13 points to settle at 1,937.74 on Thursday

 The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index lost 2.13 points and settled at 1,937.74 points on Thursday, the last trading day of this week.

The index lost 0.11 percent today (Thursday). The index had lost 11.97 points on Wednesday.

The index that opened at 1,940.19 points, made an intraday low of 1,925.22, an intraday high of 1,947.91 and ultimately closed at 1,937.74 points.

A total of 3,401,762 shares of 227 companies were traded via 22,176 transactions, resulting in a turnover of Rs 1.04 billion in the secondary market today.

KMC writes to NA and Nepal Police, asking them to pay taxes

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has written to the Nepali Army (NA) and Nepal Police to submit rent taxes.

A letter was dispatched to the NA and Nepal Police asking them to visit respective ward offices to pay rent taxes within 10 days of the receipt of the document.

“As it appears that the revenue has been generated by renting out space, it is requested to submit the tax to the relevant ward office of Kathmandu Metropolitan City,” the letter read.

“After repeated requests fell on deaf ears, the security organizations have been asked to pay the taxes along with the penalty within 10 days of receipt of the letter,” it added.

It is also mentioned that if the taxes are not paid even during the given period, action will be taken according to the Municipal Revenue Act, 2075, and the process will be carried out to collect the government arrears.

NRB issues repo worth Rs 20 billion

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has issued a repurchase agreement (repo) worth Rs 20 billion on Thursday.

The repo will mature on September 22.

The bank is issuing the repo to prevent the shortage of liquidity in banks and financial institutions.

The Central Bank has been issuing repo continuously for the past few times to address the liquidity crunch problem in the banking system.

According to NRB, ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ class banks and financial institutions would buy the repo through bidding.

Nepal sees 227 new coronavirus cases, one death in past 24 hours

Nepal recorded a total of 227 new cases of coronavirus and one death in the past 24 hours as of Thursday.

Of the confirmed cases, 137 were detected through the RT-PCR method and 90 through the Antigen method.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, a total of 4,401 swab samples were tested in the past 24 hours.

Of them, 1,518 samples were tested through RT-PCR and 2,883 through the Antigen method.
