60 women to trek to Shey Phoksundo to draw attention to climate change impact

KATHMANDU: A group of 60 women will trek in the remote Phoksundo area of Dolpa to draw attention to the impact of climate change on women’s lives and tourism.

A walk will be held in the remote area of Karnali with the participation of women leaders of various sectors including the people’s representatives of all seven provinces in October 2022.

Likewise, a trek to Mount Everest basecamp was also organized on March 8.

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jiwan Ram Shrestha said that the trek would be effective in bringing Nepal’s tourism to the world stage and conveying the message of the impact of climate change.

Minister Shrestha praised the Government of Nepal for giving priority to the program in which women from different sectors would participate.

Likewise, Supreme Court Judge Sapana Pradhan Malla suggested that the government and the people should take initiative to save trekking and mountaineering as it is the mainstay of Nepal’s tourism.

She said that the campaign from Kalapathar to Phoksundo would bring enthusiasm to the entire women’s community.

Likewise, Prajita Karki said that she was ready to highlight the impact of climate change on the high mountainous region, nature-based tourism and the problems faced by local women and draw the attention of various bodies for its solution.

“This is a journey to understand, and debate and find solutions to the impact of climate change on nature, nature-based local tourism and people’s lives,” Karki said.

According to the organizers, the trip will be attended by various levels of government, diplomatic missions and media personnel.

The women’s team is preparing to reach the Phoksundo area by air after a three-day trek from Dolpa’s Jufal Airport and then from the district headquarters Dunai.
