KATHMANDU: Electric buses procured by cooperative bus company Sajha Yatayat have begun formal operation in Kathmandu from Thursday.
Three electric buses have begun plying Kathmandu roads after the public bus service was inaugurated by cooperative’s founding chairperson Bishwa Bandhu Thapa today. Thapa, waving a green flag, inaugurated the service.
Thapa said the buses now were part of Kathmandu Valley’s public transportation system and will ply on exisiting routes of Sajha buses.
All the three electric buses are being driven by women drivers.
Chairperson of Sajha Yatayat Kanak Mani Dixit said 37 more buses were expected to arrive in Kathmandu by mid-August of this year.
CHTC Company in Nanjing, China, sold the buses to Sajha Yatayat at cost of around Rs 15 million each.
Two buses will operate on the New Bus Park-Airport route via Balaju, Thamel, Ratna Park, Singha Durbar, Baneshwor and Min Bhawan, while one bus will ply the Lagankhel-Budhanilkantha route via Lainchaur and Bansbari.
