KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has directed speedy construction of holding centers in districts sharing border with India.
At a meeting of COVID-19 Crisis Management Coordination Center (CCMCC) held at at the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers Friday, he directed to construct holding centers in the border areas of Jhapa, Biratnagar, Parsa, Kapilvastu, Nepalgunj, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts immediately in view of rising coronavirus infections in the country and neighboring India.
CCMCC’s meeting discussed the alarming rise in the cases in India and its impact in Nepal.
Nepal Army briefed about the coronavirus situation and the challenges it posed while the Ministry of Health gave a presentation on the COVID-19 test and vaccination campaign during the meeting.
The meeting convened by Prime Minister Deuba was attended by Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand, Health Minister Birodh Khatiwada, Finance Minister Janardan Sharma, Foreign Minister Dr. Narayan Khadka, and Chief Secretary, among others.
PM Deuba, who is also the coordinator of CCMCC, expressed commitment that he would not allow budget to fall short to intensify vaccination campaigns and erecting holding centers.
Earlier, the Ministry of Health and Population confirmed 24 more cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus Friday.
The country recorded 968 new cases of coronavirus, an alarming surge in the virus transmission in the country, in the past 24 hours. Of the confirmed cases, 572 were detected through the RT-PCR method and 396 from the antigen method.
Likewise, there are 284 cases in Kathmandu, 23 in Bhaktapur, and 62 in Lalitpur, taking the total cases in the valley to 369 in the past 24 hours.
According to the Ministry of Health and Population, there was no coronavirus-related death reported in the past 24 hours. With this, the COVID-19 death toll in the country is 11,602 till date.
There are 5,741 active cases of coronavirus in Nepal as of Friday.
