Peacekeeper Anil Gurung killed in Congo



KATHMANDU: A Nepali peacekeeper has been killed in the line of duty in Congo.

A group of militias had attacked a squad of Nepali peacekeepers deployed under the command of Lt. Colonel Nikil Kunwar on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Anil Gurung of  Gurbhakot-14 of Surkhet, according to the Directorate of Public Relations and Information of Nepal Army.

United Nations Secretary General António Guterres in the condolence message has offered tributes to the deceased and condemned the lethal attack on the peacekeepers.

According to the Nepal Army Headquarters, the attack had been carried out at a time when the Nepali peacekeepers had captured the stronghold of the militias following a cordon and search operation.

Critically injured Gurung, who had been airlifted to Level 2 Hospital in Bunia from the incident site, breathed his last in the course of treatment.

Meanwhile, the UN has urged the authorities of the Republic of Congo to bring the guilty to book following a through investigation saying that an attack on the peacekeepers is a war crime.
