CPN-US Chair Nepal says HoR dissolution likely

KATHMANDU: CPN-Unified Socialist (CPN-US) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal has said that the House of Representatives (HoR) can be dissolved.

Speaking to the media at the Parliament building in New Baneshwor on Sunday, he said a situation in which parliament could be dissolved arose from the main opposition CPN-UML’s long obstruction of parliamentary proceedings.

Responding to a query of a reporter that the rumors of early elections were circulating, CPN-US Chair Nepal said it was obvious. “The UML does not allow the House to function, obstructs every proceeding, lawmakers secure allowances and harass ruling parties,” he said.

He argued, “If this goes on, then the parliament itself will have to dissolve to deal with KP Oli’s broodings. There will be no parliament and no room for any commotion. We will be heading to the polls early.”

When asked if the parliament is dissolved and early elections are to be held, would that happen before or after local level elections slated for May 13, he responded that everything would be done in a package.

The UML has been continuously obstructing the parliament since September 8. It has demanded that the speaker should resign if action is not taken against 14 defecting lawmakers, including CPN-US Chair Nepal.
