KATHMANDU: A crucial meeting held to discuss the ratification of Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) between top leaders, including Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, UML Chairman KP Oli and Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” ended inconclusively.

During the two-hour discussion at the PM’s residence in Baluwatar, Prime Minister Deuba proposed that the MCC should be moved forward from the current session of the Parliament.

UML Chairman Oli, meanwhile, dismissed PM Deuba’s proposal saying it was not appropriate for the ruling coalition, which itself is in a state of confusion, to seek the support of the opposition.

Oli also said that his party would not allow smooth functioning of the parliament until the 14 lawmakers of the Madhav Kumar Nepal’s party – the Unified Socialist – were not dismissed from the parliament.

Speaking to Khabarhub, a leader who participated in the meeting said that today’s meeting could not reach any conclusion on any issue, including the MCC.

Prachanda proposes to take forward MCC after election

Meanwhile, CPN-Maoist Center Chair Prachanda proposed to take forward the US grant MCC Compact to the parliament only after the upcoming elections.

Presenting Maoist Center’s stand on MCC, Prachanda proposed to notify the US that the MCC would moved forward after the election.

According to UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, the Maoist Chair proposed to seek the consensus of the opposition party after the election.

Earlier, Prime Minister Deuba and leader Prachanda had written a letter to the MCC last September expressing their commitment to create a conducive environment to ratify MCC in five months.

Accordingly, the US had agreed to wait for a few months before taking any decision on the grant. Reminding the government’s commitment, the MCC recently replied, requesting the government and the Maoist Chairman Prachanda to make a formal decision on the issue.

According to leader Pokhrel, Prime Minister Deuba and UML Chair Oli did not comment on Prachanda’s proposal.

The three leaders had a discussion on Sunday from 4 pm to 6 pm.
