RASUWA: Following the destruction of roads, bridges and other infrastructure in the Bhotekoshi River flood, commercial goods stored in Kerung, China, are now being transported to Nepal through the Korala border point.
More than 400 containers of goods stored in warehouses in Kerung have begun being transported through an alternative road route after the devastating flood, triggered by a landslide and the overflowing Lhende Khola, swept away roads and government offices on both sides of the Rasuwagadhi border area, according to Musa Transport.
Musa Transport Managing Director Zhang Xeping said the infrastructure at Rasuwagadhi and the road connecting the area with Kathmandu would take considerable time to rebuild. As a result, the Korala border point is now being used to transport the goods into Nepal.
“Transport of goods through the shorter road route had been accelerated as major festivals such as Dashain and Tihar were approaching in Nepal,” he said.
Meanwhile, several containers carrying goods along the Rasuwagadhi-Trishuli road were swept away by the flood, resulting in significant losses of property and lives.
Zhang said his company had been transporting goods manufactured by Chinese companies on behalf of Nepali traders and businesspeople to Nepal’s border areas.
He said his ancestors from the Muslim community had travelled from Bagbazar in Kathmandu to Tibet for trade and business. Continuing that connection, Zhang said Musa Transport is currently based in Shigatse and has been involved in transporting goods to Nepal’s border points.
