Finance Minister Sharma stresses early implementation of MCC project

KATHMANDU: Finance Minister Janardan Sharma stressed early implementation of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) project.

In a virtual meeting held between MCC officials, including Deputy Vice President of Europe, Asia, Pacific, and Latin America Jonathan Brooks, MCC acting National Director Sanjay Poudel, US Embassy’s Political Expert Rosy Kattel and the Ministry of Finance officials on Monday, Minister Sharma said that though one year remained for the implementation of MCC, it should be started at the earliest.

“The one-year implementation period is too long,” Minister Sharma conveyed, adding, “We want to start work as soon as possible. I want the MCC to make the necessary preparations for that.”

Although there seem to be some problems in the process of approving MCC from the parliament, he assured that he would not allow any problems to surface during the implementation phase.

“The MCC is an economic project that ordinary Nepalis believe would start soon. Therefore, it is imperative not to wait a year to start the project. The project should be implemented as soon as possible,” he said.

During the virtual meeting, Deputy Vice President Brooks expressed confidence that the project would help move Nepal’s economy in a positive direction.

He thanked Finance Minister Sharma for playing a leading role in getting the project approved.
