Demand for electricity in Kathmandu “exceeded NEA’s expectations”: Kulman Ghising

KATHMANDU: Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Kulman Ghising, has said that the demand for electricity in the Kathmandu Valley has remained higher than expected.

Speaking at a press conference at the Electricity Authority on Friday, Ghising admitted that there were problems in some places in the distribution system of Kathmandu after the increase in demand — currently 500 Megawatt, which is 80 MW more than last year.

“Our feeder lines and transformers have become overloaded due to increased demand,” he said adding that there are about 3,800 transformers across the valley.

According to him, as many as 60 transformers are facing problems.

He also apologized for not being able to regularize the power distribution in Kathmandu Valley in the last two three days.

“We have taken this problem as an opportunity,” Ghising said.

He said that work is underway to build a structure in the Kathmandu Valley to supply more than 2,000 MW.
