CJ Rana hears cases, issues order amid SC judges’ boycott of benches and Nepal Bar’s protest

KATHMANDU: Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana has heard two cases and issued an order on Sunday amid the boycott of benches by the Supreme Court judges and protests of the Nepal Bar Association.

CJ Rana issued an interim order in one of the cases after hearing two writ petitions assigned to his bench in the afternoon. Hearing on the other case is to be continued Monday.

CJ Rana issued an interim order on a Nepal Army employee’s case, filed by Attorney General’s Office, mandating it be heard in a regular court. The case had been sent to military court by the Chitwan District Court and the Hetauda Bench of the Patan High Court. The AG’s Office had named Chitwan District Court as defendant in the writ.

Meanwhile, SC Justices and Nepal Bar upped the ante against CJ Rana, calling for his resignation. Nepal Bar staged a protest program at the Supreme Court from 10 am to 11 am today by wearing black bands. The Bar urged all legal practitioners in the Kathmandu Valley to participate in the protest program.

The call for resignation of CJ Rana is getting louder each day. SC justices also formed a three-member team to discuss a safe exit by engaging in dialogue with CJ Rana.

A hearing on a case that was assigned to a division bench comprising CJ Rana and Justice Kumar Regmi could not be held as Regmi did not attend the bench.
