KATHMANDU: Former Speaker and senior Advocate Damannath Dhungana has said that a campaign aimed at reform began from the judiciary as institutions envisaged by the constitution have started to become corrupt.

Participating in a phase-wise protest organized by the Nepal Bar Association on Sunday demanding the resignation of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, senior Advocate Dhungana said the judiciary was now in peril.

“The institutions mandated by the constitution have not lived up to constitutional expectations. Those in the leadership have not been able to work in accordance with the law and the code of conduct,” he said, adding, “All this indicates that the judiciary is in danger.”

Stating that the reform campaign had begun from the judiciary, he said the main goal of the protest was defending the constitution and democracy.

“Other institutions as well are being corrupt and not just the judiciary. But we started cleansing process from the court,” he said. He expressed commitment of not backing out from the campaign.
