Reconstruction of Hiranyavarna Mahavihar begins with Chhema Puja

KATHMANDU: Lalitpur locals have performed a “Chhema Puja” at Hiranyabarna Mahavihar prior to starting its reconstruction at Patan Durbar Square in the district.

Officials from the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, Central Level Project Implementation Unit, Nepal government and Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH)  participated in the traditional ritual that took place on Thursday.

Listed in the UNESCO World Heritage, Hiranyavarna Mahavihar, which is located at the memorial area of Patan Durbar Square, is to be reconstructed at the cost of Rs181 million. This is considered as one of the most valuable monasteries based in Patan.

The Indian government has pledged to provide Nepal US$ 50 million to reconstruct 28 cultural heritages damaged by the mega earthquake in 2015. The reconstruction of Hiranyavarna Mahavihar falls under this project.

Of the seven reconstruction projects related to cultural heritages in Lalitpur, five projects are underway, currently.
