Opposition parties term budget as “populist”



KATHMANDU: The opposition parties have said that the budget for the fiscal year 2021/22 announced by the government could be interpreted as populist slogans brought in targeting the election rather than practical implementation.

They have stated that there was not a practical ground for uplifting the economy and collecting the revenues as per the expectation mentioned in the budget.

Nepali Congress leader Dr Minendra Rijal blamed that the government has mentioned populist programs targeting to garner votes for the ruling party.

It seems that the budget has prepared the foundation for election as it is not practical in this COVID-19 hit critical hour, Rijal said.

There are not focused programs to contain the pandemics, he added.

Similarly, CPN (Maoist Centre) leader and former Finance Minister Barshaman Pun said that the budget was presented on unconstitutional way as the ad hock government cannot bring full phase budget except administrative expenditures.

He added that the programs included in the budget are highly populists and not practical ones, Pun said.

Former governor of Nepal Rastra Bank Dr Deependra Bahadur Kshetri said that the budget was brought aimed at pleasing all rather identifying the need.

The capital expenditure has decreased by 1.5 per cent in comparison to last year budget and seems intended to lessen the developmental expenditures.

The oppositions have doubted on the implementation of the budget. The budget is brought by means of ordinance as the House of Representatives (HoR) is dissolved.
