Govt recommends revocation of ordinance on political parties

KATHMANDU: The government has recommended the President to revoke the ordinance on political parties.

A cabinet meeting held Monday evening decided to make the recommendation to scrap the ordinance, a minister said, adding, the ordinance had been posing an obstacle for the expansion of the Council of Ministers.

Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) had been pushing for the scrapping of the ordinance. The minister said that it was recommended to revoke the ordinance as the door to split parties remained open with the threshold of either 20 percent of central members or lawmakers of parliamentary party.

After the ordinance on political parties was issued by the President on August 18, the CPN-UML and JSP had split. New parties the CPN-Unified Socialist Party led by Madhav Kumar Nepal, and Democratic Socialist Party led by Mahanta Thakur were registered.
