KATHMANDU: Eighty-five people were killed and 44 others went missing in the monsoon-induced disasters across the country so far since June 14, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoFA).
As many as 5,500 people affected by the flooding and landslides were rescued to safety. Seventy districts have been affected by the incidents, said Hom Kala Pandey, chief of the Disaster Management Division under MoHA while making public the data on monsoon-induced disasters at the disaster management meeting on Friday.
The meeting was held under the chairpersonship of Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand. On Friday alone, three persons were killed and three others went missing in the flooding occurred in different parts of the country. At least 400 people affected by flooding were evacuated to safety. Likewise, 19 houses have been damaged.
Over Rs 1.1 billion is estimated to be spent on the reconstruction of buildings and structures damaged by flooding and landslips in 38 districts. Over 29 roads were damaged. The disaster-affected districts are Kailali, Nawalparasi, Kanchanpur, Dang, Rautahat, Rupandehi, Mahottari, Kapilvastu, Chitwan, Sindhuli, Khotang, Sindhuli and Bajura.
Meanwhile, Minister Khand directed for the expedition of search and rescue efforts for the victims and prompt repairs of damaged roads. He also directed all security agencies and concerned authorities for the evacuation and relief distributions to around 400 families hit by flooding.
The meeting was also attended by officials from Nepali Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the Department of Roads and the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
