SC hearing writs against ordinance on political party split today

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) is hearing the writ petition filed against the ordinance brought by the government to facilitate the division of political parties today.

According to the SC, six separate writ petitions have been filed seeking annulment of the ordinance on the political party split brought by the Deuba government.

The apex court is going to hear the same writ petition today.

The government had recommended the President to issue an ordinance that would allow split in any parties with the support of at least 20 percent members in both the Central Committee (CC) and the Parliamentary Party (PP). The ordinance was issued by President Bidya Bhandari on August 18.

Opposition parties have been lashing out at Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba saying that the ordinance was issued abruptly by ending the parliamentary session.

With the issuance of the ordinance, the CPN-UML and the Janata Samajwadi Party have split.

Earlier, the KP Sharma Oli-led government had also issued an ordinance that allowed split in any parties with the support of at least 40 percent members in both the CC and PP. The ordinance had also been widely criticized.
