1,641 Nepalis die in Qatar in past one decade



DOHA: A total of 1,641 Nepali workers have died in the last one decade in Qatar, a major destination for Nepali workers for employment.

As many as 1,641 Nepali workers have died in the last ten years, according to The Guardian.

The Guardian reports that the number of migrant workers dying has risen since the construction of a stadium for Qatar’s 2022 World Cup began.

More than 6,500 migrant workers died between 2011 and 2020, the newspaper said.

Twelve migrant workers die in Qatar every week with India having the highest number of migrant workers dying.

A total of 2,711 Indian nationals died during the period followed by Bangladesh with 1,018 workers, 824 from Pakistan and 557 from Sri Lanka.

Of the Nepalis who died, 48 per cent died of natural causes, 16 per cent by road accidents, 10 per cent by accidents at work and 9 per cent by disease, bleeding and kidney failure, according to local media outlests.

Similarly, 10 percent died due to suicide, 1 percent due to murder and the cause of death of the remaining 7 percent is yet to be ascertained.

Qatar has been building stadiums, roads and public transport for the past decade, targeting the World Cup in Qatar next year.
