Mahesh Basnet meets Resham Chaudhary as PM’s special envoy

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML leader Mahesh Basnet has met with imprisoned  Resham Chaudhary at Dillibazar Prison on Friday.

UML Central Committee member Basnet met Chaudhary as a special envoy of UML Chairman and Prime Minister KP Oli.

The meeting between Basnet and Chaudhary is viewed significantly as PM Oli is holding talks with Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Chairman Mahanta Thakur and other JSP leaders, including Rajendra Mahato, on power-sharing.

Resham Chaudhary was elected to the Parliament from now-dissolved Rashtriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) from Kailali Constituency-1.

He had registered his candidacy via proxy and was elected by an overwhelming majority. JSP Chairman Thakur was the founder of RJPN, which later merged with Upendra Yadav-led Samajbadi Party to form the existing JSP on April 23, 2020.

Meanwhile, JSP leaders Upendra Yadav and Babu Ram Bhattarai are against PM Oli and the PM is making efforts to side with Thakur and Yadav.

Also, Home Minister Ram Babu Thapa on Thursday assured the Tharu community that issues related to Tikapur incident would be resolved through political dialogue. Minister Thapa had reached Maitighar to meet with protesting Tharu leaders yesterday and urged them to hold dialogue with the government.

Home Minister Thapa said the government was positive about addressing Thau community grievances through political dialogue.

In this context too, the meeting between Basnet and Chaudhary is perceived to be meaningful.
