KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) has ordered the government to make better arrangement at Nepal-India border and allow people to enter only by showing their identity cards.
After the hearing on a writ petition filed by advocates Chandra Kant Gyawali, Bimal Gyawali, Liladhar Upadhyaya, Sashi Kumar Karki and border expert Buddhi Narayan Shrestha, on Sunday, the SC ordered the government to make substantive changes in the incumbent provisions.
A bench of SC Justices Prakash Man Singh Raut and Purushottam Bhandari passed the after the hearing on the writ petition filed in 2016 was over.
According to border expert Shrestha, the petitioners have demanded to make it mandatory to carry identity cards for both sides’ people travelling to and from here in Nepal. They have also demanded to keep records of cross-border activities.
“Human trafficking, terrorist activities, counterfeit Indian currency and drug trafficking have increased due to the lack of data on people crossing the open border,” he said. That has added to the security challenges in both countries.”
The petitioners have lauded the SC verdict.
