KATHMANDU: The Melamchi Water Supply Project (MWSP) is all set to supply drinking water to Kathmandu valley from March 28.
The MWSP has completed many of its technical preparation to supply water to taps in the valley.
Last month, the project successfully tested its tunnel by releasing water into it. The main tunnel of Melamchi project is 27,584 meters and carries water from Helambu of Sindhupalchowk to Kathmandu.
A similar attempt to test the water tunnel had failed last year. Two employees died when water had burst open a control gate last year.
According to Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL), water will be supplied through the old network of pipeline and reach 80,000 taps for now. Work to set up 30,000 more taps is underway.
Preparation to supply water from new pipeline is also ongoing. Most of the project-related tasks are in final stage of completion.
The project was started 22 years ago with an aim of bringing water from Sindhupalchowk to Kathmandu.
