SC judges conclude CJ Rana ought to be investigated

KATHMANDU: The Sunday’s meeting of Supreme Court justices has concluded that Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana should be investigated for his alleged involvement in the ruling coalition as he lost confidence of majority of justices.

Discussions by a majority of Supreme Court judges concluded that the Chief Justice should be investigated and if that does not happen, the judicial leadership should pave way for saving judicial integrity.

Today’s informal meeting of the majority judges present at the apex court, including senior judge Deepak Kumar Karki, reviewed the credibility of the apex court and the allegations against Chief Justice Rana.

The attendees of the meeting agreed that there was truth in most of the news and that the judicial leadership was incompetent. Even today, the third day of the opening of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Rana has not called any hearing. Earlier on Thursday and Friday, the Chief Justice had not taken up any cases related to him.

A judge, who did not want to be named, said that today’s meeting discussed issues such as division of power of the Chief Justice, opacity of the judicial leadership, corruption, need for redress of grievances and the role of judges to prevent it.

He said, ‘Judicial leadership has never been so notorious in history. Many questions have been raised, the perversion of the judiciary has reached the streets. In such a situation, if Chief Justice Rana is not investigated, the people’s trust in the court will be lost.

“If all the issues raised now are wrong, then why is Chief Justice Rana wasting time in meetings with the political leadership rather than forming an inquiry committee from the apex mechanism?” the participants asked.

Talking to Khabarhub on condition of anonymity, another judge said, “Chief Justice Rana has been involved in controversies one after another. He has been involved in serious misconduct, immorality and non-judicial activities and today the credibility of the Supreme Court of Nepal has been damaged due to the judicial leadership.”

He labeled the situation as shameful.

“It is a shameful situation to hear the verdict of a judge close to the Chief Justice,” he said.

The sensitive and complex issues of the country have not been heard yet. That is also because the Chief Justice is involved. The Constitutional Court has been made a weapon of self-interest.

“There is a lot of controversy in the court,” Another judge said under anonymity, “In view of such a situation, our discussion also focused on the need to go against the rulings of the court in order to save the dignity of the judiciary.”
