International Day of Peace today



KATHMANDU: The International Day of Peace is being observed across the country today.

The UN General Assembly had passed the motion in 1981 to mark the International Day of Peace on the third Tuesday of September, the day UN General Assembly began. The first International Day of Peace was observed in September 1982. Later in 2002, September 21 was fixed officially by the UNGA as the International Day of Peace.

The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons has already come into force. As many as 86 countries have become signatories to it while 55 countries ratified it.

Nepal is however yet to ratify it, according to General Secretary of Human Rights and Peace Society, Ram Krishna Baral.
