KATHMANDU: The Democratic Socialist Party (DSP) has decided to vote in favor of the United States grant Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact (MCC).
DSP leader Laxman Lal Karna said the party decided to endorse MCC if the government presented it in the parliament. He clarified that the DSP was not against MCC.
The government is preparing to table the MCC proposal in the parliament. However, owing to differing views of ruling coalition parties on the agreement, the government backed out from tabling the compact in Tuesday’s parliament session.
Meanwhile, a three-member task force led by CPN-Unified Socialist leader Jhala Nath Khanal has been formed to hold talks and reach an understanding among parliamentary parties on passage of MCC.
The main opposition CPN-UML is on a wait-and-watch mode as the government’s stance is not solid on the grant agreement. The UML, when it was in power, was in favor of passage of the US-backed grant however after its exit from the government it has remained mum on the issue.
