UML takes action against leaders supporting Bhim Rawal

KATHMANDU: The UML has initiated disciplinary actions against several leaders and activists who supported former Vice Chair Dr Bhim Rawal, who was expelled from the secretariat meeting on December 26, 2024.

Six leaders from Rawal’s home district of Achham have been targeted, accused of undermining the party’s interests.

The district committee took action against these leaders for supporting Rawal’s ‘Matribhumi Jagran Abhiyan’ (Motherland Awareness Campaign), which the party leadership sees as contrary to its policies.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, District Chair Chandra Bohara and Secretary Bhim Bahadur Rawal clarified that the leaders were being punished for violating the party’s statute by engaging in activities against its objectives.

The individuals facing action include District Committee Secretariat Member and Organization Department Head Prakash Shah, District Committee Secretariat Member Sagar Singh Babli, District Committee Members Bal Bahadur Kunwar, Shankar Bhul, Ratan Rawal, and Sanphebagar Nagar Committee Chairman Dhakendra Kunwar.

These leaders have been removed from their party responsibilities for their involvement in the rally organized by the ‘Matribhumi Jagran Abhiyan Nepal’, where they reportedly raised “undemocratic and indecent slogans” against the party leadership, including the Prime Minister and the chairman of the party’s central committee.

This development follows a significant move by around 1,100 UML leaders and activists from Achham, who declared their support for Rawal, signaling potential challenges for the party in the far-western region of Nepal.

With Rawal’s new campaign gaining traction, it is feared that the UML could face a major setback in that area.
