SC hearing on UML writ against Speaker Sapkota and EC

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court is hearing on the writ petition filed by CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli against the Speaker, the Election Commission (EC) and 14 defecting lawmakers including Madhav Kumar Nepal.

Questioning the role of the Speaker and the impartiality of the Election Commission in the action taken against 14 lawmakers including Madhav Kumar Nepal, the UML Chair had filed a writ in the Court.

According to sources, the division bench of Justices Deepak Kumar Karki and Kumar Chudal is hearing on the writ today.

UML Chairman Oli had filed against the EC alleging that the new party was formed by identifying the signatures of 14 lawmakers dismissed by the party.

Though the UML had sent a letter to the Parliament Secretariat and the Election Commission on August 17 expelling 14 lawmakers, including Madhav Nepal, claiming it was taken by the party’s central committee meeting on August 9, EC had validated them as the lawmakers of newly formed CPN-Unified Socialist.

UML has been obstructing the parliament sitting on the same issue.
