Only firing cannons at Tundhikel doesn’t justify Constitution Day: Former Speaker Dhungana

KATHMANDU: Former Speaker Daman Nath Dhungana has said that the rationale of Constitution Day will not fulfilled only by firing cannons at Tundikhel.

Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu Sunday, the former Speaker expressed dissatisfaction over the Nepali Congress (NC) not celebrating the Constitution Day as it should have.

“At least the NC should have issued a nationwide circular to celebrate Constitution Day. And every year, Constitution Day should be celebrated up to the lower echelons of the party,” he said. “It would have help in institutionalizing the Constitution and making it sustainable. Constitution Day cannot be marked just by firing cannons in front of the Prime Minister at Tundhikhel.”

Former Speaker Dhungana was of the view that Constitution Day should be celebrated in every school and government office. Constitution Day is celebrated every year to commemorate the day of promulgation of the new constitution. The government also gives public holiday on Constitution Day.

Dhungana said that a struggle between those trying to tear apart the constitution and those trying to strengthen it was ongoing. He urged all to be aware of what needs to be done about the constitution: be it amendment or improvement.
